SUMMARY:
Runerra is a mobile application that aims to connect people headed to the store with nearby family, friends, and neighbors who need items from the same store they are going to. We were charged with evaluating its key task flows from both the runner and buyer perspective and suggesting ways they could be clarified by improving the design or enhanced by adding new features. We opted for a lean UX approach that would allow us to rapidly cycle through phases of research, design, and evaluation.

CAN YOU GRAB ME SOMETHING WHILE YOU'RE OUT?
In order to get a feel for the competitive landscape, we conducted an analysis of six mobile services that operate in the same, or adjacent, spaces. We focused on which features they had in common, as well as which features made each unique.
Competetive Analysis
Proposed feature sketches
STAKEHOLDER INTERVIEW:
We met with the originator of the application and its lead developer in order to get a clearer understanding of what past approaches had been most successful as well as a sense of their future vision for the app.

FEATURE SKETCHES:
We then ideated a wide variety of potential new features and other improvements to Runerra in the form of low-fidelity sketches. The goal of these proposed features was to increase adoption and retention rates for the application.

USER SURVEY:
The stakeholders then voted on which designs would move forward to the next stage. The eleven features that received the most votes were included in a survey that was sent out to Runerra's most active userbase. They were asked to select on a 5-point scale how they would feel if each feature was present and, conversely, how they would feel if each feature was absent.
New feature survey
KANO ANALYSIS:
My team then conducted a Kano Analysis of the survey results to determine which features were most critical for enhancing the application's utility for users. Based on the results of the analysis, and an allotted developer time budget of 2 months, I selected the following features to move forward with:
FEATURES SELECTED:
Modifications to the intro screens to more clearly communicate describe what a Run entails from the runner and buyer
A community details page showing most frequented establishments and an activity log
A favorite places screen to allow runners to quickly select stores they have designated as favorites
A product details page that allowed buyers could list specific details as well as upload a photo of the desired product
Allowing users to set their preferences for exactly which types of events they receive notifications for

A LA CARTE:
Having designated the features which would most improve Runerra I produced hi-fidelity wireframes of each in Sketch.

TRANSACTION INTRO:
Runerra is similar to other mobile applications that operate in the “shared economy” space, but with some nuances that new users do not always immediately grasp. For this reason, one of the most important refinements Runerra would benefit from is making clear how the logistics of financial transactions work. Modifications to the existing onboarding intro screens would help facilitate this.

COMMUNITY PAGE:
The key to Runerra succeeding is establishing a sense of community among its users. The community profile page would help illustrate a group's identity to new and existing members as well as serving as a useful tool.

FAVORITE PLACES FEATURE:
Humans are creatures of habit and tend to frequent the same establishments. A favorite places feature makes it easy for Runners to create runs to the establishments they usually go to.
ITEM DETAILS PAGE:
Buyers being able to clearly communicate to runners exactly which items they want is essential to promoting confidence in the application and maintaining its utility for users.

NOTIFICATION SETTINGS FEATURE:
Not all users require the same levels of communication. Particularly in a situation where people are grabbing each other lunch, or a cup of coffee, step-by-step notifications can be excessive. A notifications settings screen allows users to decide what types of communication best suit them.

JOURNEY MAP:
I then created a project journey map to depict the interactions between, and touchpoints used by, both the buyer and runner. Included was a visualization of how each new feature implemented would improve the experience for both.

TO-GO ORDER:
This Journey map was combined with detailed annotated wireframes explaining each new feature and the rationale behind it to create a feature proposal deck. This was then handed off to stakeholders and developers at Runerra.
